Walmart DEX Implementation Email

Many Walmart vendors just received an email outlining a new requirement to start using DEX by 7/15/19. I have copied the email below with the contact information changed. For those not familiar with DEX, please check previous blog posts.

A couple of clarifications regarding the email.

I believe the sentence "An internet for DEX Invoicing Software will provide several options for purchase" should read "An internet search for DEX Invoicing Software will provide several options for purchase"

The sentence, "Make note of the COMM ID that you receive when purchasing DEX software" is misleading. A Comm ID, is provided to the vendor by GS1, not by the DEX software provider. A DEX software provider should be able to help with the process of getting a Comm ID but does not provide the Comm ID.

We have had a number of calls regarding the July 15th time frame. This is a tight time frame, especially with the upcoming July 4th holiday. Its possible to be up and running with DEX within a short period of time but there are a number of factors that could delay the implementation. Some of these include hardware availability, is the data in place and properly formatted, specifically UPCs and is there someone on the vendors staff that has the time needed to devote to getting DEX up and running.

Compared to other retailers, the Walmart requirements of the vendor appear to be fairly minimal. In addition, its implied that Walmart is going to spot check those vendors who have a track record of correct invoice data which will provide additional incentive to use DEX and to make sure your invoices are accurate. In our opinion, this is an excellent decision by Walmart

Below is the email Walmart sent to vendors:

This communication is intended for teams within your company that have responsibility for Walmart direct store deliveries. You have received this communication because you are listed as the Retail Link site administrator for your company – please forward to the appropriate teams.

To: Walmart Stores U.S. Direct Store Delivery Suppliers

RE: Action Required: Update to Walmart’s Direct Store Delivery (DSD) Program

This communication is to notify our DSD suppliers of a change to Walmart’s DSD program. All DSD suppliers delivering merchandise to Walmart U.S. stores will be required to use an electronic data interchange (EDI) protocol.

This change does not impact suppliers already transmitting advance ship notification (ASN) to Walmart – no action is required by these suppliers.

Companies unable to onboard to ASN are required to use a similar transmission tool called DEX/Digital Exchange. DEX is invoicing software/route accounting software. DEX minimizes wait times, quickly identifies errors and reduces payment claims and disputes.

Action Required by July 15, 2019

For Suppliers that do not have DEX:

Obtain/purchase DEX invoicing software/route accounting software. An internet for DEX Invoicing Software will provide several options for purchase. Make note of the COMM ID that you receive when purchasing DEX software To run DEX, you will need:

-Attain Android or Windows tablet, phone, or mobile computer with a quarter inch male stereo jack

-Acquire DEX cable RS224 or RS422 for each driver who services Walmart

To complete the DEX installation, you will need the following Walmart information:

-WM DUNS #: 051957769

-WM COMM ID: 9254850000

-DEX Version: 4010

Refer to the DEX Supplier requirement documents (attached).

One you have installed the DEX software, continue the DEX set-up process by emailing the below information to xxxxxx@walmart.com:

-Vendor name

-Six-digit Walmart supplier/vendor number

-DUNS number

-COMM ID (that you received when DEX software was purchased)

-The Walmart store number that you will complete a live delivery of a DEX transmission. You will need to take a printed copy of the delivery authorization memo – provided to you from Walmart – for you to take to the store to complete the delivery.

For suppliers that already have DEX:

Email the below information to xxxxxx@walmart.com:

-Vendor name

-Six-digit Walmart supplier/vendor number

-DUNS number

-COMM ID (that you received when DEX software was purchased)

The Walmart store number that you will complete a live delivery of a DEX transmission. You will need to take a printed copy of the delivery authorization memo – provided to you from Walmart – for you to take to the store to complete the delivery.

Once a successful DEX delivery is completed, your company will have the capabilities to deliver to all stores via DEX.

Getting a CommID

A little confusion in the DEX world about how a vendor gets a CommID. There has been a document floating around saying you will get a CommID when you purchase DEX software from your software vendor.
